The Gramscian Moment Philosophy, Hegemony and Marxism Peter D. Thomas

Antonio Gramsci's Prison Notebooks are today acknowledged as a classic of the human and social sciences in the twentieth century. The influence of his thought in numerous fields of scholarship is only exceeded by the diverse interpretations and readings to which it has been subjected, resulting in often contradictory 'images of Gramsci'. This book draws on the rich recent season of Gramscian philological studies in order to argue that the true significance of Gramsci's thought consists in its distinctive position in the development of the Marxist tradition. Providing a detailed reconsideration of Gramsci's theory of the state and concept of philosophy, The 'Gramscian moment' argues for the urgent necessity of taking up the challenge of developing a 'p…

Marxism and Human Nature

Marxism and Human Nature. London and New York: Routledge, 1998; paperback edition 2007.
"Sayers's book is an articulate, sophisticated and clear
discussion of human nature as a historical phenomenon. It
is beautifully written and has insights into a rich range of
topics from the role of work in contemporary society to
the ambivalent nature of social progress. Anyone
interested in sociology, politics and philosophy of our
society will find this book thought-provoking and
fruitful."
Professor David McLellan, University of Kent
Is there such a thing as human nature? In Marxism and
Human Nature, Sean Sayers defends the controversial
theory that human nature is in fact an historical
phenomenon. Those who disagree with this theory counter
that it leads to forms of scepticism and relativism which
are at odds with morality; Sayers reveals that this need not
be the case. Drawing on the work of Marx and Hegel, he
develops a historical account of human needs and powers
which provid…

Angelica Nuzzo, Hegel and the Analytic Tradition, Continuum, 2010

Angelica Nuzzo, Hegel and the Analytic Tradition, Continuum, 2010, pp. 224. Description Offering one of the first initiatives of reconciliation between the analytic and continental philosophical traditions, this important collection of original essays offers a new perspective on Hegel’s philosophy within the context of some of the themes central to current discussion.
Placing Hegel at the intersection between continental and analytic philosophy, the book presents an indispensible guide to the most current contemporary debates and to an emerging topic within Hegel studies. Analytic philosophy has long been held to consider Hegel its bête noir. Yet in fact Hegel and analytic philosophy converge on some crucial issues, which suggests that, although analytic philosophy initially declared its anti-Hegelianism, it is in fact nourished of Hegelian themes and defended through Hegelian concepts.
The essays in this volume address this apparent paradox, offering ‘analytic’ readings of Hegel, Heg…
